Volunteer Position Description

Adult Volunteer

 

Purpose

To train high school students to serve as jurors, panelist, and attorneys for youth led hearing sessions in which a juvenile offender, who has admitted his/her guilt, agrees to receive a sentence for a crime he/she has committed.  The goal of the Adult Volunteer is to assist youth volunteers and staff in seeking justice and determining the most appropriate sentence for the juvenile offenders.   

 

Location

Hearing and training locations vary but include:  San Francisco Superior Court, San Francisco City Hall, the Juvenile Justice Center, San Francisco Unified School District Administrative Office, and various school sites throughout San Francisco.

 

Responsibilities

Adult Mentors assist youth in serving as effective restorative justice advocates for the respondent, the victim and the community and staff in implementing trainings and hearings.  Specific duties include:

§   Assist Peer Court Staff with duties necessary in the operation of peer court

§   Organize Peer Court youth volunteers and participants

§   Facilitate Peer Court proceedings

§   Provide instructions for youth volunteers, families, and youth referred to Peer Court

§   Participate in periodic evaluations of volunteers and program performance

 

Minimum Time Required

§   Basic Restorative Justice and Adult Volunteer Training:  2 hrs

§   Hearings:  2-3 hrs per hearing

o   Peer Court requests that you commit to volunteering for at least 2 hearings during the academic year.  Hearings take place 2-3 times per month and require a 2-3 hour time commitment (usually between 4pm – 8pm) per hearing. 

 

Qualifications

§   Commitment to San Francisco Peer Court’s mission and program

§   Interest and/or experience in mentoring youth

§   Have transportation to sites located throughout the County

§   Abide by strict confidentiality policies

§   Ability to work with and problem solve with other volunteers
